MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Immunomedics, Inc. (NASDAQ:IMMU) today announced Ivan Horak, M.D., the Company's Executive Vice President of Research and Development and Chief Scientific Officer, has terminated his employment with the Company. Dr. Horak has decided to refocus his career in oncology and the development of small molecules, in which he was active before joining the company.

"We are grateful to Dr. Horak for his contributions to our Company over the last several years, particularly related to the commencement of our Phase III pivotal trials with epratuzumab in patients with lupus. We now have stronger preclinical and clinical departments. During the transition, Dr. Horak will continue to work with the Company on clinical trial activities," stated Cynthia L. Sullivan, President and Chief Executive Officer.

"I am very pleased to see the advancement of epratuzumab into pivotal Phase III trials in the unmet medical need indication for lupus therapy. The novel mechanisms of action of epratuzumab may provide a significant advantage over existing therapies. I am confident that the Company's current team will successfully execute this pivotal program. Furthermore, I am pleased that over last few years the Company has built a pipeline of novel agents targeting a broad spectrum of autoimmune diseases and cancer," commented Ivan D. Horak, M.D.

"With our current clinical, regulatory, and biostatistical teams, as well as the contracted clinical research organization running the lupus registration trials, we do not anticipate any delays due to Ivan's departure. It is our intention to expand our rheumatology and oncology clinical staff to manage our other Phase I and II clinical studies in these areas. We wish Ivan much success in his new endeavors," Ms. Sullivan further remarked.

About Immunomedics

Immunomedics is a New Jersey-based biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of monoclonal, antibody-based products for the targeted treatment of cancer, autoimmune and other serious diseases. We have developed a number of advanced proprietary technologies that allow us to create humanized antibodies that can be used either alone in unlabeled or "naked" form, or conjugated with radioactive isotopes, chemotherapeutics or toxins, in each case to create highly targeted agents. Using these technologies, we have built a pipeline of therapeutic product candidates that utilize several different mechanisms of action. Our lead product candidate, epratuzumab, is currently in two pivotal Phase III trials for the treatment of patients with moderate and severe lupus (ALLEVIATE A and B). At present, there is no cure for lupus and no new lupus treatment drug has been approved in the U.S. in the last 40 years. Adult Stem Cells From Adipose Tissue Could Save Lives

Adult Stem Cells From Adipose Tissue Could Save Lives

Scientists to Present Findings at National Meeting

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- National and international scientists, including those from the University of Virginia Health System, will announce findings from a significant number of studies showing that adult stem cells from adipose tissue (fat) could eventually be used to treat injured or damaged tissues. They will present their research findings at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville, Virginia, September 10-13, during the third annual International Fat Applied Technology Society conference, The Role of Adipose Tissue in Regenerative Medicine: Opportunities for Clinical Therapy. Reporters are invited to attend and a press room will be open to meet their needs.

In total, 47 research abstracts will be presented from both academia and the private sector. Findings suggest that adipose-derived stem cells can be used to repair or regenerate new blood vessels, cardiac muscle, nerves, bones and other tissue, potentially helping heart attack victims, patients with brain and spinal cord injuries and people with osteoporosis. The work to be presented reflects a growing number of researchers who believe that adipose tissue (fat) will be a practical and appealing source of stem cells for regenerative therapies of the future.

"Five years ago we were seen as mavericks," says Dr. Adam Katz, plastic surgeon at the University of Virginia Health System, co-founder and president of the International Fat Applied Technology Society, and conference coordinator. "Now there is a sense of validation and growing enthusiasm from an increasing number of international researchers who view adipose tissue as a potentially valuable source of therapeutic cells."

The international group of scientists and physicians at this conference will address a range of topics devoted to developing new therapies using adipose stem cells. They will be representing UVa Health System, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Boston University, University of Pittsburgh, Indiana University, UCLA and Cytori Therapeutics. Internationally, they hail from Japan, Germany, France, Korea, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.

The conference is being sponsored by Olympus Corporation, Cytori Therapeutics, Inc., Baxter, The University of Pittsburgh, Sound Surgical Technologies, Vet-Stem, The Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative, Artecel Inc., Toucan Capital Corp and the UVa Health System.

Reporters interested in attending and covering the conference can receive travel and lodging information by calling the Public Relations office at the University of Virginia Health System at 434-924-5679. Interviews with scientists also can be arranged.

The International Fat Applied Technology Society is the world's only interdisciplinary adipose tissue society. IFATS uniquely brings together different disciplines within the field in order to share knowledge, influence policy and exchange new ideas. Scientists and industry are working toward productive collaborations to develop new technology derived from and directed toward adipose tissue. For more information, visit http://www.ifats.org/

Epilepsy Foundation Issues Emergency Information for Hurricane Refugees Experiencing Seizures

Epilepsy Foundation Issues Emergency Information for Hurricane Refugees Experiencing Seizures

LANDOVER, Md., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Following a series of recent news reports from the afflicted Gulf Coast, the Epilepsy Foundation today recommended the following steps for people with epilepsy requiring daily medication to prevent seizures and who have been dislocated from areas hard- hit by Hurricane Katrina. Family, friends and relatives are urged to share the vital information below:

* Access to medication can be a life-and-death issue for people with
epilepsy due to the potential for breakthrough seizures when drug levels
in the blood fall below therapeutic levels. Breakthrough seizures can
take the form of non-stop seizures, called status epilepticus, and can
result in neurological damage and disability, and even death. Many
dislocated individuals in the region have neither access to critically
needed seizure medications nor information on how to obtain them.

* The Red Cross, through its local chapters and emergency shelters, is a
primary source of medication assistance. They can help provide access to
medications to meet the immediate needs of affected persons. In some
localities, the Red Cross has arrangements with local clinics where
people can be referred to doctors who will provide needed prescriptions.
If available, individuals should provide the Red Cross disaster health
representatives with prescriptions, physician contact information and
other medical documentation.

* The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is preparing special
instructions for access to emergency medications. We will provide the
instructions as soon as they are released.

* The pharmaceutical industry, which plans to donate and ship desperately
-needed medicines, asked the Federal government earlier this week to do
a public health assessment.

* The Partnership for Prescription Assistance brings together America's
pharmaceutical companies, doctors, other health care providers, patient
advocacy organizations and community groups to help qualifying patients
who lack prescription coverage get the medicines they need through the
public or private program that's right for them. Many will get them free
or nearly free. Its mission is to increase awareness of patient
assistance programs and boost enrollment of those who are eligible. The
website at http://www.pparx.org/ and the toll-free number 1-888-477-2669
offer a single point of access to more than 475 public and private
patient assistance programs, including more than 150 programs offered by
pharmaceutical companies.

* Medco, a major mail order supplier of medications, has made arrangements
with local pharmacies nationwide that will make it easier for its
members who may be dislocated to obtain medication. Medco members with
questions should call the customer service number on the back of their
membership identification card. Dislocated individuals with memberships
in other mail order services should check with their medications service
and area pharmacies to see if there are similar arrangements in place.

* If a dislocated individual has purchased medications through a drug
store chain, the person should go to another location of that chain to
find out if the prescription information is available through the drug
store's computer database. If it is, the prescription can be filled at
the new location.

The Epilepsy Foundation, a national non-profit with affiliated organizations throughout the United States, has led the fight against epilepsy since 1968. The Foundation's goals are to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences; and to prevent, control and cure epilepsy through research, education, advocacy and services. Kaiser Permanente Contributes $2 Million to Support Public Health Response to Katrina

Kaiser Permanente Contributes $2 Million to Support Public Health Response to Katrina

The CDC Foundation Seeks Donations to Help CDC and Public Health Partners Purchase Critical Supplies and Equipment

ATLANTA, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The CDC Foundation today announced a $2 million gift from Kaiser Permanente to support the national public health response to Hurricane Katrina. The contribution was made to the CDC Foundation's Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund, which is accepting contributions to enable the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and its state and local partners to obtain equipment, supplies and services that are not readily available or are difficult for government organizations to purchase quickly.

As the threat of disease outbreaks, tainted water supplies, chemical exposures and other health risks loom in the aftermath of Katrina, the public health community is mounting a full-scale emergency response. CDC director, Dr. Julie Gerberding, has activated CDC's state-of-the-art Marcus Emergency Operations Center to support the Department of Health and Human Services as a coordinating hub for the response.

CDC and other public health leaders are identifying both the immediate and long-term needs of state and local public health agencies working on the frontlines in the affected areas. Communications equipment such as satellite phones, laptop computers and GPS devices are among some of the supplies that response teams need immediately. Laboratory equipment and reagents, supplies to support immunization programs and health education resource materials are additional urgent needs in some areas. As the public health consequences of the disaster become clearer, officials say they will be focusing on preventing and controlling infectious disease outbreaks (food-borne, water-borne and insect-borne), checking water quality, restoring critical laboratory functions and rebuilding public health and laboratory infrastructures.

"This hurricane and its aftermath are creating challenges that we are only beginning to understand," says Dr. Gerberding. "The extensive flooding, damage to healthcare and public health facilities, lack of transportation, disrupted communication and widespread power outages will have an impact on this area for many years to come. Public health agencies across the region will be challenged to restore basic services and prevent further threats to health in the hurricane's aftermath."

To help protect the public's health during this crisis, Dr. Gerberding asked the CDC Foundation to activate its Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund. The Fund, established after 9/11/01, provides flexible, immediate resources for CDC to use in a public health emergency. CDC Foundation president and CEO, Charles Stokes, authorized the use of the Fund and committed to raising additional dollars to support the hurricane response efforts.

"While the President has moved swiftly to provide support to the regions affected by Hurricane Katrina, a crisis like this will always lead to unforeseen needs that the government cannot address rapidly," says Stokes.

"As CDC's non-profit partner, the CDC Foundation is ideally positioned to help CDC and its public health partners secure crucial resources quickly and get them into the hands of those who need them. Our unique independent status allows us to help CDC do more than it can do as a government agency, faster than it can do it with the government restrictions within which it must work," he says.

"We are pleased that Kaiser Permanente has recognized the importance of a quick and comprehensive response to the broader public health threats wrought by Hurricane Katrina and are grateful for their generous lead gift to support these efforts." Stokes adds.

Because of the scope of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, Dr. Gerberding requested that the Fund be made available to CDC's state and local partners assisting with the emergency response. CDC's Emergency Operations Center will coordinate and prioritize these activities.

"This Fund will help us fill urgent gaps and speed our ability to take actions to protect health and restore the public health system in affected areas," she says.

Raymond J. Baxter, Kaiser Permanente senior vice president of Community Benefit says, "We are proud to be the initial donor to such a vital effort addressing the public health needs of the Gulf Coast region. Public health departments are communities' critical infrastructure in a natural disaster like this, and in the ongoing protection of communities' health over time. This donation is an affirmation of Kaiser Permanente's longstanding partnership with the CDC to protect the nation's health."

To support the public health response to Katrina by making a contribution to the CDC Foundation's Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund, call (888) 880-4CDC. Donations can also be made online at www.cdcfoundation.org.*

The CDC Foundation is an independent, non-profit enterprise established by Congress to forge effective partnerships between CDC and others to fight threats to health and safety.

Kaiser Permanente is America's leading integrated health plan. Founded in 1945, it is a not-for-profit group practice prepayment program headquartered in Oakland, California. Kaiser Permanente serves the health care needs of more than 8.3 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia.

* In the event that donations exceed the need for supplies and services related to Hurricane Katrina response efforts, donations to the Fund will be used for future public health emergencies.
